10 Outdoor Spring Cleaning Projects
Spring cleaning is not exciting for many of us. But it has to be done. As the holidays and winter end and we start looking forward to spring and warmer weather, something inside of us encourages us to get our homes in order by cleaning, organizing and purging things we’ve hoarded over the winter months.
But who says spring cleaning is only for the inside of your home?
The exterior of your house could likely use some refreshing after a cold, wet winter, too!
It’s Time For Home Exterior Cleaning
Here are home exterior cleaning projects that will improve the curb appeal of your house in San Antonio, and, even more important, will provide much-needed care and maintenance that will save a lot of money in years ahead.
1. Gutter Cleaning
Spring is the best time to clean your gutters, because so many of leaves and debris collected during the fall and winter months. Pollen is at its highest during the spring, making a huge mess in your gutters if they aren’t properly cleaned.
Plus, bugs and critters are scavenging for places to build their homes during spring, so having your gutters cleaned will help to prevent an infestation in your home.
Gutter cleaning consists of cleaning the inside and outside of your gutters, removing mold, mildew, rust stains and restoring them to a like-new appearance.
2. Window Cleaning
Home window cleaning is a must for spring cleaning. First floor windows won’t give you too much of a problem, but second and third floor windows are trickier to reach.
Cleaning windows by hand is a tough job, and will need a lot of tools, not to mention going up and down a ladder! A soft wash or professional cleaning of your exterior windows is the perfect solution to get the panes and the outer frame nice and clean.
3. Pressure Washing
You don’t want clean gutters and windows on a dirty home. That means you are going to want to pressure wash your house too!
Pressure washing is fast, effective and doesn’t cost too much. You can clean your home, outdoor furniture, patios, wood and stone porches and walkways with very little effort. It will knock off dirt and mud so they won’t permanently stain your house, and you can also prevent the spread of mold, mildew and allergens.
4. Driveway Cleaning
Clearing off your driveway and giving it a good cleaning may seem silly because you’ll just be driving on it, but, a clean, well-cared for driveway can increase the curb appeal of your house.
A professional pressure washing service can do wonders for driveway cleaning, whether it is pavement, asphalt, stone or some other material. Also consider adding a gravel border to your driveway to really help it pop!
5. Patio Cleaning
Your patio gets the most use throughout the summer months, so it’s easy to forget about it during the winter when you aren’t doing a lot of outdoor entertaining, leisure or grilling. Your patio might be in rough shape the first time you step onto it in the spring.
Detergent and water – and a little hard work – are sometimes be enough for patio cleaning, but if there are signs of mold or algae, you need to consider a more aggressive option, like professional power washing, to ensure that friends and family can enjoy your patio all summer long.
6. Roof Cleaning
Mold and moss are common roof issues in San Antonio. While you’re cleaning the exterior of your house, it is a great time to clean your roof as well, but you’ll need to use a different process than what you use for most of your home’s exterior cleaning.
If you see streaks on your roof, algae is most likely the reason. Moss is fairly obvious, too. These contaminants can’t be scrubbed off of shingles, nor can you pressure wash the roof. Both of these methods will damage the shingles on your roof.
The best method for roof cleaning is to spray the shingles with a half-water, half-bleach mixture and then let it be. This solution will eliminate any organic organisms on your roof without lowering its lifespan.
7. Spruce up the Front
The front of your house is probably what most people passing by see, so make the best impression you can for visitors and for yourself! Coming home to a clean exterior will immediately improve your day, and will even encourage you to spend a lot more time outside.
Clean your front porch with soap and water or a good pressure wash. Clean cobwebs and dirt off of the front porch, and think about painting it for a really bright look! Clean overlooked areas including the porch ceiling, light fixtures and ceiling fans, too.
8. Organize Outdoor Tools
You will soon be spending a lot more time outside, so spring is an excellent time to organize the things you’ll need for outdoor work.
Yard tools and pool care equipment should all have an assigned area outside your house – somewhere that it is safe from harsh weather and out of sight so it is not a constant eyesore. Spending the time to organize in the spring allows you to appreciate the exterior of your house so much more during the time of year that you are going to spend the most time outside.
9. Lawn Care & Landscaping
Your yard, trees and garden bushes can make a huge impact on the look of your house.
Kill weeds around your flower beds and walkways, till up places where you will be planting later on and brush off walkways. You can also spray pre-emergent weed poison to make yard care easier on yourself throughout the summer. Trim all the bushes too.
10. Clean the Grill
After sitting unused for several months, your gas or charcoal grill could use a good cleaning, too. Leftover grease and food from your grill are unappetizing, but they can also make you and your family ill.
Wet it down to remove ash, then scrub the grates with a scrubber (so you do not leave behind particles that can sometimes get into food) and a dish soap or degreaser.
